Raphael's Visitation's two pregnant moms dominate the pictorial area, highlighting the distinct graces bestowed upon Mary and Elizabeth. Raphael, the world's most sought-after painter at the time, had only recently mastered oil painting when he created this picture, and the novel method allowed for softer effects and more natural-looking detail. The compositional device of clasped hands was a late addition, departing from previous paintings in which Elizabeth either knelt or embraced Mary. The background propels the viewer to the Baptism of Christ, when the cousins John and Jesus meet again. John pours water over Christ while above, the skies open to reveal God the Father, borne by angels in a burst of golden rays.
