In his Adoration of the Shepherds, Ghirlandaio places Christ on a fold of Mary's gown against the ground, while all the other characters kneel in adoration around Him, rather than portraying the Christ child in a manger and enfolded in swaddling garments. Joseph turns away to face the sparkling procession of the coming Magi. The pageant winds its way over an expertly depicted distance in a colourful variety of pinks, yellows, and reds flecked with gold leaf - precious highlights conspicuously absent in the foreground individuals. Ghirlandaio himself stands out as the kneeling shepherd in the foreground, pointing to the Child with his palm on his heart, demonstrating not only his authorship of the work, but his devotion to the subject.
