Art historians know little about this Northern European painter, yet his Presentation at the Temple uses bright colour to a captivating effect. Mary's mantle is a rare shade of lapis lazuli blue sourced from Afghanistan. St. Joseph's garment is a more muted blue, while Simeon's tunic appears to be tinged with brown. But, despite the enjoyment for the eyes, this brief respite is only a prelude to prolonged anguish. Jesus, sitting up in his mother's arms, is on a direct diagonal with the newborn, who is being stabbed by one of Herod's soldiers. St Joseph, seemingly relegated to the outskirts of the scene, was intentionally placed below the brutal attack, a reminder that he will soon have to flee with his family from the murderous rage of Herod.
