Dr. Sol Harkens has committed his life to the cause of atheism after losing his young son to cancer. He has turned his attacks on Christianity into a lucrative profession as a best-selling author and famous debater. Not only is he eager to communicate his contempt for God, but he also gets enormous excitement and gratification in bashing his Christian opponents on stage. Despite his popularity and prosperity, Sol remains hollow and sad on the inside, and his increasing reliance on drink to mask the pain is making matters worse.
His ex-wife Katy and their two remaining sons have been estranged from him due to his New York partying lifestyle. Sol has grown to detest their unwavering faith in God, telling Katy that he is sick and tired of her praying for his soul.
Sol's destructive behaviours eventually catch up with him, and a catastrophic vehicle accident leaves him clinically dead for four minutes before he is resuscitated by some brave first responders. It's a miracle he's still alive, but what happens during those four minutes completely transforms Sol's perspective on life. It's a four-word message that, despite his best efforts to deny it, will not let him go.
With the support of Katy’s unwavering love and faith, and his own questions about what he may or may not have actually experienced, Sol struggles to find meaning and purpose in the words LET THERE BE LIGHT.
