A young man sought advice from a Jesuit priest in the hopes of recovering his marriage. They would pray together during their discussions, asking Mary's intervention. The priest would untie the knots in the husband's wedding ribbon as they worked. Years after the man and his wife reconciled, their grandson commissioned Johann Schmidtner's picture Mary Untier of Knots, which came to symbolise their exceptional devotion to Our Lady.Almost three decades later, while studying in Germany, another young Jesuit priest, Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis), stumbled across a painting depicting Mary slowly removing knots in a long string. He brought a replica of the painting to Argentina and began to spread the devotion. He saw that this image depicted how Mary can assist us in undoing the obstacles and tribulations that constitute the "knots" in our life. Many more people were encouraged to take up devotion to Mary under the title of Our Lady Undoer of Knots when he became Pope, and have received consolation and encouragement through her powerful intercession.
