•••••

One of the most powerful and compelling spiritual books ever written. Expounding on the theme, "What doth it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul". St. Alphonsus dwells repeatedly on the Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell. Relentlessly, he brings the reader to considering his own eternal destiny. No one can read these sermons without being profoundly moved.

Challenging, Sanctifying, and a Great Aid in the Spiritual Life
(Ontario, Canada) | January 5th, 2023
This is incredible! As the book subtitle suggests, each sermon corresponds to each Sunday in the liturgical year, although it can be read in any order and at any pace; each sermon is titled on a topic (e.g., Compassion of Christ, Education of Children, etc.), so topics can easily be found, if desired. Each sermon is about six or seven pages long, the pages are a good thickness, and everything is easily understandable. The whole work is packed with insight dwelling on the Four Last Things -- death, judgement, heaven, and hell. Many of the sermons are challenging and humbling, as they expose your own weakness and great need for mercy. St. Alphonsus does not water down the faith for a second or shy away from difficult topics, if you are looking to burn away pride, grow in humility, and escape lukewarmness in faith, this book is for you. St. Alphonsus is serious in wanting to aid you in becoming a saint, I recommend this book to everyone.
