The sheer size and detail of Sacred Scripture intimidate most readers. Many passages have confounded scholars through the centuries. As for laymen, most simply don't know how to read the Bible. The trick is to read it in organized fashion, with Catholic teaching ever in mind. That ís hard to do, on your own.
