This book is widely regarded as the most comprehensive study of Jesuit spirituality available to date. In three parts, it deals with Ignatius’s own spirituality, the historical development of the Ignatian spiritual heritage within the Society of Jesus, and Jesuit spirituality in general.
The book’s first section traces the growth of Ignatius’s own spiritual outlook, revealing him as one of the outstanding mystics of the Church, and showing his spirituality at work in the Spiritual Exercises.
Part II considers spiritual movements, activities, and controversies in and around the Society from 1556 until the 20th century, and discusses the works of the major spiritual writers. The last section covers a variety of general issues on Jesuit doctrine, the reformation of life, and the practice of the Spiritual Exercises.
