Review for Religious, a journal published by Jesuits of the Missouri Province from 1942 through 2012, featured articles across the spectrum of religious life, including prayer and spirituality, best practices, and canonical guidelines. David L. Fleming, S.J., one of the last editors of the journal, chose 28 essays first published in the journal for the collection Praying as a Christian. “In praying, we need to face the reality that God takes us where we are, not where we think we should be,” Fleming writes in an introductory essay. “Consequently, we pray from where we are.”
Other essays include Gina Hens–Piazza’s “Learning to Curse” (“Uttered in the context of prayer, the curse becomes a vehicle for catharsis”), Eamon Tobin’s “Spiritual Dryness: Some Practical Guidelines” (on working through “the desert periods of the spiritual journey”), and Kathleen P. Deignan’s “The Challenge of Peace: Prayer in the Nuclear Age.”
