Review for Religious, published by Jesuits of the Missouri Province from 1942 through 2012, featured articles on a wide range of topics relevant to religious life.
This is the third in the Best of the Review series, available only as a readable CD–ROM, which compiles 42 essays on both the theology and psychology of spiritual direction.
Included in this 445–page collection are “Toward a Method for the Study of Spirituality,” by Edward Kinerk, S.J.; “Spiritual Direction in the Church,” by John R. Sheets, S.J.; “The Distinction Between Psychological and Religious Counseling,” by Robert Rossi, O.S.C.; and “When You Can’t Pray: Removing Obstacles to Prayer,” by Mary C. Coelho.
The final section of this collection, “Spiritual Direction: Special Concerns,” covers practical issues related to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the spiritual direction among groups. Editor David L. Fleming, S.J., contributes an original essay on the modern practice of spiritual direction, warning against “a very secular–style approach” with a “focus on self” rather than on the gifting of Christ’s spirit.
