What is Saint Joseph's highest title?
The most righteous, most chaste, patron saint of the dying, terror of demons, and protector of the Holy Church are just a few of the rich names that the Litany of Saint Joseph is laden with, but one title sticks out that is subtly missing: the closest to Christ. No other man that God has made has been as near to Christ as Saint Joseph. The first person to ever hold God in his arms was him. Only he was known to have saved Christ's life. In the end, he was the man picked out of all men to be the father of God on earth.
Saint Joseph was long foreshadowed in the Old Testament, just as his Son was. Looking at these biblical archetypes helps us see that Saint Joseph is also known as the provider of the Eucharist and the souls in purgatory, among other things. Although Saint Joseph's Day has passed, our understanding of our spiritual father is still developing. Saint Joseph is the key to unlocking the treasures of Our Lord's Sacred and Eucharistic Heart because he is the greatest saint after Our Lady. The aim of our spiritual existence is to imitate Christ. What better way to emulate Christ than to take a cue from Saint Joseph, the person who spent the most time with Him, the one closest to Christ.
