Fr. Hans Urs von Balthasar addressed two seminars on redemption in Paris in the 1960s. One evaluated Christ the Redeemer's point of view. The other presented a picture of salvation from the standpoint of Mary and the Church, who agreed to Jesus' sacrifice. These two conferences constitute what Fr. Jacques Servais, S.J., calls "a lantern of the Word" in his introduction, shining light amongst the increasing turbulence of the postconciliar era.
These discussions were eventually gathered in a single book by the prominent theologian Henri Cardinal de Lubac, S.J., together with an anthology of reflections on the Passion by the mystic Adrienne von Speyr, chosen by von Balthasar.
Fr. Servais, the director of Casa Balthasar in Rome, presents a substantial postscript enriching the text alongside the original introduction by de Lubac in this new edition, made for the centennial of Hans Urs von Balthasar's birth.
