This charming illustrated book for children (of all ages!) is a sequel to Joseph and Chico, the international best-seller that traced the tale of Pope Benedict XVI's life from his childhood through his election as Pope. This gorgeously illustrated book, by the same award-winning author and illustrator, is intended at children but will appeal to adults as well. It continues the story of Benedict XVI's new life as Pope.

This book's narrator is a blue rock-thrush who spends most of his time atop the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica and in the Vatican gardens. (This bird's scientific name is Monticola Solitarius, and it actually resides in Rome.) Max is the name of this specific bird, and from his solitary perch, he observes everything in the surrounding. He is particularly enthralled by one human being in particular: the Pope. Max educates readers about the Pope's daily activities as well as major events in his life, such as vacations and apostolic missions. The book provides a delicate portrait of the Holy Fathers many responsibilities, and it helps us understand the Pope Benedict’s important obligations that he always strives to carry out with love, faith and dedication.

Max discusses the Pope's private and public audiences, encounters with heads of state and children, significant liturgical events, and the Angelus. He also mentions more unusual happenings, such as the blessing of lambs and the arrival of a fire vehicle. He tells us about the time the Pope spends writing and praying. Max flies to see the Pope at his summer residence, Castel Gandolfo, and regrets not being able to accompany him on crucial apostolic trips, but rejoices each time the Pope returns to the Vatican. Max is also pleased to watch the Pope unwinding by playing the piano or wandering through the Vatican grounds. Max loves music, too, as do many of his friends, who live in the Vatican gardens.
