Tobit's Dog: A Novel

Tobit Messager had become a successful and well-respected man despite the Jim Crow South's constant oppression. Then, one day, factors beyond his control set in motion a chain reaction of disaster that leaves him blind and virtually bankrupt. Then a charming travelling singer named Ace Redbone comes up on his doorstep, claiming to be a distant relative.

Tobit permits his son, Tobias, to follow Ace Redbone on a journey to collect a long-overdue debt in order to alleviate his family's desperate position. Ace, Tobias, and a strange dog named Okra embark on an adventure that will have surprising results. As secret atrocities are uncovered and justice, which had almost been lost, is served, currents of grace begin to ripple through not only Tobit's family but his entire community.

This retelling of the biblical narrative of Tobit, set in North Carolina during the Great Depression, brings the beloved Old Testament characters to life in unpredictable ways, including the vital but generally neglected family dog.
