Fr. Basil Nortz expertly expands on the famous thoughts on the twelve degrees of silence of Sr. Marie-Aimée de Jésus, a nineteenth-century spiritual mystic and Carmelite nun. By cultivating various sorts of silence, you will discover how to listen to God's voice even in the midst of your hectic days packed with chatter, turmoil, and noise.

In these insightful pages, you will discover how to overcome your fear of quiet and discover:

  •     Keys to obeying God’s will
  •     Kinds of silence that are holy and kinds that are unholy
  •     Ten tips on what to do — and what to avoid — to bridle your senses
  •     Seven ways to guard your imagination and foster recollection
  •     How to direct your emotions with reason and foster silence of the heart
  •     Effective ways of responding to injustice
You will discover the one sinful attitude that separates us from God's gracious forgiveness and will learn how to avoid passing judgement on others. You will also learn the most essential attitude that predisposes us to God's intentions and helps us to enter into His love and converse affectionately with Him throughout the day. You will also find practical tactics for resisting distractions in prayer, as well as counsel from the saints on meditation practises for developing spiritual quiet.

Above all, you will learn how to keep your soul at rest and live a life devoid of anxiety and despair, regardless of temptations or life's struggles. You will courageously rise after falls and begin again if you completely trust in God. You will begin to understand God's loving hand in everything, to reflect on the light of His presence, and to "be still" in the silence of His love.

"Holy silence is what helps the soul acquire the strength necessary to bear the presence of the all-pure God, who is ipsum esse subsistens (subsistent being itself)," Fr. Nortz continues. "The intensity of that fullness, far from inspiring languid inaction, produces a vibrant joyfulness, that St. John expresses in the book of Revelation in terms of the saints singing with full voice."

Life Changing
(Amherstburg, ON) | September 22nd, 2023
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It's clear and easy to understand and extremely practical. I will read it again and again as I struggle to live Holy Silence. It's challenging and life-changing.
