Colin Miller offers a unique viewpoint in We Are Only Saved Together at a time where social media metrics rule our sense of connection and happiness. Inspired by the rich legacy of the Catholic Worker movement, Miller shows how real fulfillment—not in virtual validation but in genuine connections, shared experiences, and the search of the common good—lies This timely reminder reminds us that the practice of the Gospel, among others, in company with others, and particularly in relationship with the poor reveals the delight we are designed for.

Miller encountered a group of homeless men living outside a church building while finishing his doctorate studies in theology at Duke. Miller came to see that the word of the Gospel was about forming a community, and not only about feeding the homeless or assisting them to find shelter and other necessities. This is the cure to the loneliness, isolation, and emptiness that afflict our planet. He also discovered the Catholic Worker movement, Peter Maurin, and Dorothy Day along the road. Inspired by their work, he cofounded a Catholic Worker House committed to communal prayer, material simplicity, communion with the poor, decent labor, and daily community.

This book is a call to become fully Catholic by accepting the fundamental traditions that have always been at the core of the Church and finding Christ in the places he promised to meet us: in worship, in community, in the poor. Inspired by one of Dorothy Day's favorite saints, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Miller offers doable suggestions for what to think about while seeking Christ in these locations:

  • exploring the power of shared meals and feasts;
  • reframing our encounters with people in poverty through a surprising look at the Good Samaritan parable;
  • ideas on how to live close to the land;
  • discerning the qualities that bring dignity to our work; and
  • steps to embrace voluntary simplicity.

We Are Only Saved Together is not about becoming a Catholic Worker; it’s about becoming a disciple who discovers friendship, adventure, and joy in the Gospel. It’s about pursuing a holiness so old it looks new.

Are you ready for an adventure filled with meaningful friendships, community with the poor, and good works? It might not always be easy, but it is definitely worth it. Let’s go!
