“The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed” (Gen. 2:8). From the Garden of Eden to the Garden of the Resurrection, crucial episodes in God's plan of salvation have taken place in gardens from the beginning of time. Cardinal Arthur Roche considers these gardens as metaphors for the spiritual life in his book The Gardens of God. The agony of Gethsemane, the joy of the empty tomb, the intimacy of the enclosed garden, and the prospect of paradise all relate to distinct points in the Christian's journey. The Gardens of God, which began as retreat talks for bishops and priests, will now appeal to all the faithful, encouraging them to walk with God in the garden of the soul once more.
