The Constitutions of the Society of Jesus and Their Complementary Norms: A Complete English Translation of Official Latin Texts
In 1995, the 34th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus mandated a revision of the Constitutions of the Society, the first edition of which was published in Latin. This English translation includes the Constitutions’ “original Ignatian text” along with explanatory notes showing where it has been abrogated, modified, or clarified over time.
The volume also comprises the “norms complementary to the Constitutions,” which explain how they are to be lived in the contemporary renewal of Jesuit life and apostolates. The Congregation decreed that the two elements of Jesuit law should be published in a single volume. As Peter–Hans Kolvenbach, then superior general of the Society of Jesus, wrote, the Constitutions and norms should be read together “so that the living internal unity that exists between these two parts of our law might shine forth more clearly.”
