Lay–Jesuit Collaboration in Higher Education: A Woodstock Forum with Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, Howard J. Gray, S.J., and John J. DeGioia, Ph.D.

Shortly after the selection of Dr. John DeGioia as Georgetown’s first lay president in 2001, the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University hosted a 2001 forum that addressed the question, Is there an “Ignatian community” in which a lay president can be a member?

This brief volume includes presentations from that event. Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, speaks on “A Particular Collaboration within a Universal Church”; Howard J. Gray, rector of the Jesuit community at John Carroll University in Cleveland, talks of colleagueship in the context of the 34th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus; and Dr. DeGioia speaks on the unique qualities of Georgetown University and the challenges facing a layperson as president.

Also included is a foreword by James Connor, S.J., director of the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown, and remarks by the forum’s moderator, Woodstock senior fellow Dolores R. Leckey.

Paper binding, 53 pages.
