This textbook introduces students to the Catholic Church's social teachings, a vast body of thought that includes love and family, law and justice, war and peace, wealth and poverty, rights and obligations, and freedom and obligation. This course demonstrates how the Church's Magisterium has responded to social developments throughout the years by authoritatively interpreting Divine Revelation and preaching the demands of the Gospel. The student will discover how Christ's divine compassion for others, particularly the poor and vulnerable, is reflected in the Church's social theology and mission today.
Topics include:
- the unity of the whole human race,
- social teachings in Scripture, distributive, legal, commutative, and social justice,
- the necessity of the moral law,
- a sampling of recent pastoral letters,
- the dignity of human life,
- and the social dimension of the Commandments.
