St. Ignatius of Loyola had a deep conversion after being injured during the Battle of Pamplona. During his extended rehabilitation in his family's Loyola house, he was given two volumes to read: the life of Christ and the biographies of the saints. He devoured these books and was encouraged to make changes in his life. From that point on, he had a strong urge to emulate the saints. This desire to imitate the saints, and for each individual to find a particular calling to be a saint, aided in the formation of the Society of Jesus.
The Society would ultimately develop a following of Jesuit future-saints and blesseds who would encourage future generations of Christians to dedicate their lives for God's greater glory. With over 70 devotional and educational biographies produced by Jesuits from throughout the globe, this book strives to paint a portrait of this community of men who served God, and to encourage modern readers to be selfless in their own pursuit of a larger good.
Paperback. 460 pages.
Excerpt from the preface by Arturo Sosa, SJ:
“Our saints and blesseds have been recognized as models of union with Christ and as ‘men for others.’ … all of them show well ‘the most beautiful face of the Church,’ as Pope Francis said (Gaudete et Exsultate, 9). That face is shaped by the examples of people who abandoned themselves to God and followed more closely and intensely the way of Jesus Christ. They are the beacon that illuminates and guides us in our mission.”
