In the past eight hundred years, it is possible that no other theologian has shaped our understanding of God, man, and the Church more than St. Thomas Aquinas. While many people are familiar with his most famous work, the Summa Theologiae, fewer know of his important role as a biblical theologian. But in fact, Aquinas’ primary work was biblical theology. His biblical commentaries remain invaluable in the ongoing work of Scripture study.

The essays in Thomas Aquinas, Biblical Theologian explore some of Aquinas’ most important contributions within his biblical commentaries and the ongoing work of Scripture study. A dozen contributors explore Aquinas’ thought on faith and revelation, the study of the Sacred Page, and other dogmatic and moral considerations.

 PRAISE:

“This volume . . . celebrates a new springtime of unexpected growth in a long-neglected—yet extremely important—area of biblical and theological inquiry as well as Thomistic Studies. This is a great contribution. It promises a future of delightful scholarship still to come.”

Scott W. Hahn, Franciscan University of Steubenville

“The essays in this volume are exemplary of the best scholarship on St. Thomas as biblical theologian. The authors show exquisite sensitivity in their appreciation of St. Thomas as a reader of Sacred Scripture. At the same time, they help us understand how Scripture informs, at the deepest levels, St. Thomas’ theology which has been considered all too easily apart from Scripture. The essays in this book substantively contribute to our understanding of the place of Sacred Scripture in the thought of St. Thomas.”

John F. Boyle, University of St. Thomas

“The ongoing rediscovery of Thomas Aquinas as a master of the Sacred Page has immense importance in the elusive search to reintegrate dogmatic theology and biblical exegesis. This fine collection of studies advances the project from diverse perspectives. The wide range of historical, exegetical, and systematic insights both helps to address some significant standing questions and to articulate promising new fields of research. As a whole, these studies bring into focus with greater clarity the mechanics of Thomas’ extraordinary theological work and poise contemporary scholarship for continued penetration into the mysteries of his sacra doctrina.”

Anthony Giambrone, OP, Dominican House of Studies, Washington DC

“This excellent collection of studies helps us to better understand the sources and the nature of the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas.”

Wilhelmus G.B.M. Valkenberg, The Catholic University of America
