Gianna Beretta Molla was born in Italy on October 4, 1922 to a caring and devout Catholic family. Gianna received her doctorate in 1949 and became a missionary of love in her daily duties as a wife, mother, and physician.
Her faith was put to the test when she became pregnant with her fourth child, which caused dangerous complications to her health. She chose to keep her pregnancy and told her husband before giving birth, "If you have to choose between me and the child, do not hesitate; I demand it, the child, save it." St. Gianna died heroically in order to save her daughter's life.
She is frequently depicted with her children smiling, having lived a life of courageous joy and strength. Lilies-of-the-Valley are frequently associated with Gianna, both as her favourite flower and as the flower of the Sorrowful Mother, honouring mothers who yearn for a child and those who have lost a child.
