St. Peter, born Simon, began his life as a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus first encountered Peter as a fisherman and sent him off to fish in deep waters. When Jesus returned with a boat full of fish, he told Peter, "From now on, you will be catching men," referring to Peter's lifelong teaching and evangelism for the Church. Peter was one of the twelve apostles and the first to witness Christ's resurrection. Then Jesus gave Peter his new name, Peter (Rock), and the keys to the kingdom, saying, "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church."
