Elizabeth, a Princess of Hungary, was engaged to a German Prince at a very early age. Her religion became stronger when she married, and she started to live more like the Franciscans she admired. She dressed simply and started stealing bread out of the castle to feed the destitute on her estate.
Her husband caught her on one of her expeditions and wanted to see the food she was concealing in her cloak, but when she opened it, it was full with red and white roses. He recognised she was performing God's job, and then supported her humanitarian activities.
When sickness and floods hit her estate, she took care of the sufferers and built a hospital. After her spouse died, she made a celibacy vow and promised never to remarry.
