In 1800, Pope Pius VII made a significant difference by travelling to Vatican City by carriage rather than by horse. This represented a major shift in transportation. Since then, popes have travelled using a variety of four-wheeled vehicles. Pope Paul VI popularised the term "Popemobile" in the 1960s. Pope Pius XI selected a Mercedes-Benz Nürburg for his public engagements. Then, automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and Ford created custom papal vehicles. These vehicles frequently featured raised, reinforced glass enclosures at the rear, allowing the Pope to be seen while ensuring his safety. The accommodations in Popemobiles also accommodated clergy and security personnel. Newer models have emerged over time with enhanced safety features, enhanced visibility, and luxurious amenities. The Popemobile continues to be an iconic symbol, providing a secure platform for the Pope to interact with the devout during his global public appearances.
