In 35 AD, Saul of Tarsus, later known as St. Paul, had a life-changing conversion. Initially, he was passionate in his opposition to early Christians, stoking persecution. On a dangerous voyage to Damascus, however, a brilliant light surrounded him, followed by Jesus' voice. He was temporarily blinded and carried into the city, where he was miraculously restored to sight by a believer called Ananias. This experience sparked a significant change in Saul, transforming him into an eager Christian advocate, with his passion shifting from persecution to zealous preaching. The emblems of a sword and shield, which are usually associated with St. Paul, exemplify his multiple vocations. The sword, also known as 'Spiritus Gladius' or'sword of the spirit,' depicts his works, which emphasise spiritual truth. Meanwhile, the shield represents his dedication to protecting and propagating Christian values, exemplifying his'shield of faith.'
